| | Just returned from a trip to Blackbear Campgound, and have never in over 30 years of camping been to a worse-managed facility. The bathrooms were so disgusting. Our group opted to forego showers for the entire weekend! In fact, the smell from the bathrooms was so bad. The doors had to remain propped open to let the stink out. I'm told the men's bathroom was outside with a roof, but walls that did not touch either the roof or the floor! The lack of information upon check-in was disturbing (no map, no indication of where water/bathrooms are), but not as disturbing as the amount of money charged. For 2 SMALL sites, our group was charged $250, plus one of us was charged $6 for parking -- no | |
explanation of why the other 2nd car/site was not charged. The campground accepts ONLY CASH.... Something else not explained on the website OR when the reservation was made and the $70 deposit paid. If you are going, also be aware
| | that there do not seem to be any fire grates provided for the pits -- we saw only 1 in all the sites we went by. Despite the report of bears every night, no bear boxes are provided, garbage is not cleaned out of the bathrooms or garbage area, and no instructions are given as to where to best keep food. (Luckily we already knew). If you have no sense of smell and are independently wealthy, this is the campground for you.... It is actually very well-located on the Esopus, very convenient for tubing, and the sites are pretty. It is a true shame that such a perfectly located campground is so poorly managed.
