 at Sugar Mountain is prized by skiers from far and near. Sugar Mountain has 15% challenging runs and 85% beginner and intermediate runs. The 8 lifts at the close by ski mountain Sugar Mountain transport skiers up to the tops of the 20 runs at Sugar Mountain. This close by ski mountain gets covered by 7 feet of great snow per year and has an elevation difference of 1,200 feet. There's a total of 4 great ski lifts at nearby ski hill Hawksnest. Hawksnest gets covered by 6 feet of wonderful snow yearly, has a height difference of 619 feet, and 12 trails. 20 acres of skiable terrain is on hand to the skiers who gather at Hawksnest in winter; 70% of the trails are green and blue while 30% are difficult.  
Don't go whitewater kayaking or rafting in advance of first checking current conditions; it's dangerous stuff. Banner Elk Stables is a great place to ride horses near Jim and Jennie's Music Barn and Campground.
