HIKING WITH DON EMRICK IN MEXICO
Pictures
Iztaciquatl
The following photographs and captions should summarize my trip to Mexico City and our mountain climbing of the volcano Iztaciquatl. My father, my brother Adam, and I had been training for several weeks. This was our first high altitude climb, though we've been camping and hiking for years.
Outdoors in Western México
After passing alongside deep canyons, over rocky outcrops and through shady groves of oak trees, we finally climbed our way over and around some giant boulders. right up to the large cross. We were at the top at last, 1880 meters (6,267 feet) above sea level, after an hour and a half of rather leisurely hiking. Though it was a Sunday, we had seen no more than six people after passing the image of the Virgen. From the peak you see a wide panorama of blue-grey agaves: millions of gallons of tequila in the making. You can even make out the ubiquitous Rio Santiago frothing its way at the bottom of the deep Barranca de Santa Rosa.
POPOCATEPETL STORY
Trip Report: El Pico de Orizaba (Citlaltépetl), Mexico Elev. 18,700 feet
Exiting the glacier back into the rock field at the right place is pretty tricky. I suggest planting some wands in this area on the way up so you'll know what to aim for on the way back down. On our descent I'm afraid we got a little to close (my navigating) to Sarcophago Rock and had to gingerly cross over a number of covered up crevasses. A little scary.
