Chile - Deserts and Volcanoes
In the south Chile's highest mountain is located - Nevado Ojos del Salado, world's highest volcano (6893 m). This is our next destination. This region is almost more deserted than in the north, and despite the icy cold temperatures even over the day, water exists only in the form of "nieve de penitentes". One can break out a some not too sandy pieces to put them into the pot and produce drinking water. Our summit try ends in a wild storm at -20°C; we have no other choice than turning round in order to avoid frostbite. Such inhospitability can hardly be expected from this snowless scree heap looking so harmless.

Chile: Introduction
Geographically, Chile has to be one of the strangest countries in the world. Over 2,600 miles long yet on the average hardly more than 100 miles wide, Chile is sandwiched between a rock and wet place: the Andes mountains and the Pacific Ocean. The northern part is mostly bleak desert and worlds away from the lush Lake District that begins at Temuco and extends south to Puerto Montt. From Puerto Montt to Punta Arenas near the southern tip of the continent, Chile is a sparsely populated archipelago reaching into Chilean Patagonia.

Southern Chile
Chile is such a long country, north to south, that it spans many climate zones. If flipped head over heels into corresponding latitudes in the northern hemisphere, it would stretch from Acapulco, Mexico to Juneau, Alaska. So far, my favorite part of Chile is the woodsy lake and fjord districts immediately north and south of Puerto Montt. The natural scenery is very beautiful, the culture is quaint, the people are friendly and most costs are modest.
