Hiking and Tramping in New Zealand
Our friends across the Tasman call it bushwalking. Visitors from the northern hemisphere refer to is as trekking or hiking. In New Zealand, heading off into the wild with packs loaded for several days has long been referred to as tramping, a term which might seem mildly eccentric - until you visit the landscape.
Lake Waikaremoana
From Panekiri hut an easy descent through lush green bush leads to Waiopaoa Hut and campsite within 3 hours. From here a well graded track winds around the river shore to Korokoro Campsite via Korokoro Falls turnoff. The falls are well worth the return visit as they are a spectacular site and provided the highlight our our day. The track continues past Korokoro Campsite to Maraunui Campsite, approx. 4 hours from Waiopaoa Hut (excluding the time take for the falls). Maraunui Campsite is right on the shore of the lake, which was inhabited by swans, ducks, and the native brown teal.
Mount Aspiring National Park
This year both of our backpacking trips were in Mount Aspiring National Park, halfway down New Zealand's South Island. These pages tell the story more accessibly than my quite cryptic journal. Our first trip was a three-day trip "warm up" walk into Siberia valley, near Wanaka. We started by taking a jet boat from Makarora to Kerin Forks, which would be a long slog on foot. The walk up to Siberia Hut was quite a bit more challenging than we had expected - once more showing that contour lines on a topo map cannot be relied on with respect to the difficulty of a trail. We camped the first night at the Crucible Stream junction, then stayed in the comfortable Siberia hut the second night (which proved fortuitious since it poured while we were sleeping).
New Zealand Hikes
NZ. is an ideal place to tramp; a place of incredible beauty and with great geographical variation - ranging from sand dunes in the winterless north, to deep fiords on the southwest coast of the South Island. In between it manages to include a high bleak volcanic plateau, dense ancient forests (which we call bush) - the beautiful Marlborough Sounds, the Southern Alps, many mighty rivers and their associated flood plains.

Queenstown New Zealand
Spectacular QUEENSTOWN, the most popular holiday destination in New Zealand for international visitors, offers an incredible range of things to do in all seasons. This justifiably is known as New Zealand's action and adventure capital, which explains why the young and energetic flock here (and hate to leave).
Routeburn Track
The McKenzie Hut on the popular Routeburn is particularly swank. An outdoor porch looks out over beautiful Lake McKenzie with its mist rising up into the mountainsides that surround it.

Tramping in New Zealand

The tramp will be a 5 day walk with the each day's walking being 2 hours, 5 hours, 5 hours, 10 hours and 3 hours. The route was along the Rees Valley to the Rees Saddle, continue to the Dart River and then walk over the Cascade saddle to Mt Aspiring Hut, and walk out to the end of the road in the Matukituki Valley.
Waikaremoana and Urewera National Park
The Urewera ranges seem almost eerie and primordial, compared to other parts of the country. I think the area has a sort of `lost world` feel to it. The local maori people, the Tuhoe, are known as `the children of the mist` and this seems somehow very fitting.
