An Auspicious Ganesh
Nepal is Sandwiched between India and Tibet, most of its people live on a long flat sea level plain called the Terai, but most interest is in the capital Kathmandu, the Himalaya ("himal" means "mountain range") and the mountain tribes, especially the Sherpas and Gurkhas. There are very few vehicular roads, they are spreading out from Kathmandu but monsoons and landslides are currently keeping them almost at bay. All traffic in greater Nepal is on foot, there is some animal portering but nearly everything is carried by pedestrians. Goods are carried in conical baskets made from stripped bamboo. The baskets hang down the porter's back stabilised and attached only by a forehead strap, they regularly weigh forty kilograms, the design looks impractical and neck wrenching but it works incredibly well. The tracks are rough hewn, often comprising paddy levies or rock steps near villages and slippery creek beds or narrow pads elsewhere, and nearly always precipitous: Nepal is a land where the wheel is an impractical device.

Annapurna Circuit
Photos of Nepal scenery

Annapurna Circuit, Nepal - Oct 1995
In October/November 1995 I hiked the Annapurna Circuit and Sanctuary in Nepal. The circuit is a 200 mile journey around the Annapurna Himal, up the Marsyangdi River valley to Thorong La, a 17,700' pass, and down to the Khali Gandaki River valley. I also went up to the Annapurna Sanctuary, a high bowl in the middle of the Annapurna Himal, surrounded by 7000 and 8000 meter peaks on all sides. Along the way we traveled through dense bamboo forests, arid mountain villages, high desolate alpine terrain, and saw fields, river valleys, temples, towns, and met wonderful travelers and locals.

EVEREST
Mt Everest is located in Northeastern Nepal and stands 29028 feet above sea level. Everest was first attempted in 1921 by a group led by George Mallory but it was not intill 1953 when New Zealander Sir Edmand Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay made the summit via the south col route. It was not untill 1963 that the first American expedition made it when Seattle native Jim Whittaker summited with Sherpa Nawang Gombu. A pair of other climbers on that expedition also where the first climbers to climb the West ridge. To date some 4000 people have tried to climb Everest, around 660 have succeeded and 142 have died (based on 1996 features).

John in Dolpa, west of Nepal, 1999
We went to the North, over the pass, through the Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve. It took 6 days to trek to Tarakot. By the time we were there we were pretty much "over the hill" and in the "rain shadow" meaning that the anoying monsoon rain didn't bother us anymore. We can climb the mountains, but the rain can not.

Nepal - Annapurna
The first half of the Annapurna Circle starts with a trip to the southern foothills of the Lamjung Himal. From Pokhara (~ 900 m) the route leads through the Madi Khola valley to Tangting. A sort of primeval forest is crossed while continuing to Rambrong Peak (~ 4400 m) and down to the village of Ghanpokhara until Khudi (~ 780 m) in the Marsyandi valley is reached. The ascent of Pisang Peak (6091 m - see part II ) is the 'high' light of this first part.

Nepal Himalaya’s
The Muktinath trek is a great hike but the Circuit is one of the classic walks of the world. Combine the Circuit with a hike up to Annapurna base camp and the Sanctuary and you will be hard pushed to find a more spectacular trek.

Portraits of the Himalayas!
As Harka Gurung said, the shapes of Himalaya peaks range from the pyramid of the Everest to the pinnacle of Machhapuchhre and solidity of Nanga Parbat. You can select some of the finest portraits of the peaks from the following sections of the Himalayas: Nepal Himalaya; Garhwal Himalaya, India; Pakistan Himalaya

Solo Khumbu Trek
A very frequented and recommended peak is the Kala Patar. On the ascent we cross the Khumbu moraine - the background is dominated by Pumori (7145 m).

The 1994 American Everest Expedition
As we approached the mountain, the plume was an essential tool for us: We could time the cloud movements relative to landmarks, and compute the wind speed. With Everest ascending into the jet stream, the wind stayed at 100MPH for the entire month of April. Not much chance for thesnow to pile up. Not much chance of us getting Camp 5 placed, either. (Rats.) This did not keep us from trying, and thereby enjoying the finer points of the environment of which we were so much a part.

THROUGH THE LAND OF DOLPO
On the edge of the Tibetan plateau north of the great mountain of Dhalaugiri lies the remote and little-known land of Dolpo; a high, cold, arid region of bare rocky hills, narrow ravines and broad sparsely vegetated valleys. In the rainshadow of the Himalayas Dolpo is unaffected by the monsoon rains which makes it very dry and very hot in summer but, as much of the region is above 4000 metres, it is snowy and bitterly cold in winter.

Visit to Nepal
Nepal is a wonderful place for trekking. If you like to walk, there is no more inspiring place to do it. These pages show pictures and a journal from my treks. Traveling to Nepal is actually not very difficult, and the country is well-prepared to receive trekkers. I hope that these pages will encourage others to discover this beautiful part of the world for themselves.
