Images of India
During 1998, 1999 and 2000, I visited India, these are photographs taken on those month-long trips.
Ladakh
Beautiful pictures of nature scenery.
Ladakh & Zanskar - August 1996
The main characteristic of Zanskar is it's isolation. Ladakh is easier to get to : a jet plane flies from New Delhi to Leh, and once there, you will easily find find tourist facilities. To reach Zanskar you then have to either cross several passes between 15000 and 16500ft, or join the valley at Padum by a bad track. In this last case however, you will have to walk anyway because the track does not go very far into this valley.
TREKKING IN KASHMIR & LADAKH
My second trip to the Himalayas was in July / August 1988 when I did a 33 day trip with World Expeditions to Kashmir in northern India. Our trek was called the Himalayan Traverse Trek, a 19 day walk which went from the forests and greenery of Kashmir, across the Himalayas over glaciers, to the high altitude desert of Ladakh. As well as the dramatic change in landscape, there was also a change in culture - from Islam and mosques in Kashmir to Buddhism and monasteries in Ladakh. The trek crossed six high passes, the highest being the Kanji-La at about 17500'. Before and after the trek we spent a few days on the houseboats in Srinagar, as well as sightseeing in Delhi, Leh and Agra.
TREKKING IN SIKKIM
In April 1995 I returned to the Himalayas to do another trek, this time in Sikkim. The trek was organised by The Trekking Company, based in Canberra. After flying to Calcutta, our group travelled by train and jeep to Darjeeling. We spent a few days walking around the city visiting various sights such as the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Snow Leopard Breeding Centre, Tibetan Self Help Centre, Planter's Club, Dali Monastery and the Toy Train.
Trekking in Sikkim and Darjeeling
This travelogue narrates a visit we (Geoff and I) made last year to India, mainly around Sikkim and Darjeeling, to trek in the Himalaya, although we did spend a short time in Orissa, towards the end of the trip. With only had seven weeks leave from work, we decided to restrict ourselves to a small area, rather than try to travel large distances. This was our third visit to India, and we had previously trekked in Nepal. This visit took place from April to June 1992, in the pre-monsoonal period; it isn't an ideal time of year on the hot plains, but it is an excellent time to see the rhododendrons and orchids in the mountains.
