Remington, Model 7400 Autoloader

All Hunting Rifles >>> Hunting Rifles by Remington
More details and ordering info.

This is the gun that brought reliability, strength, and comfortable weight to semi-auto rifle actions. Add to this the fast-loading convenience and extra cartridge storage of a drop-out four-round magazine. The gas-operated action smoothes out recoil to a 'push' instead of a 'punch.' Remington's fine-line engraving process decorates both receiver panels with scrollwork and big-game scenes. Five calibers include .243 Win., .270 Win., .280 Remington, .308 Win., and .30-06 (also available with 18 1/2' carbine barrel). The Monte Carlo walnut stock with a satin finish is standard. High-gloss finish available in .30-06 and .270 Win.

User input on Model 7400 Autoloader by Remington:

Charles Stanley:
I own this model in caliber 30-06 with the gloss finish.  This is one of the heaviest rifles I own.  The weight helps to reduce the felt recoil, but it will wear you out to carry this rifle on an all day hunt.  The accuracy is terrible, but that is to be expected from any autoloader.  I had the muzzle re-crowned, but that did not help.  At 100 yards, you may expect a 5 shot spread to be 4 inches.  In a 10 shot group, you will have at least one bullet stray as much as 6 inches left or right.  The action is smooth, but this model has a history of problems with the dust cover that covers the bolt.  The dust cover will come loose and jam the action open.  The only way to fix the problem is to have a gun smith take the rifle apart, and it is a 2 hour repair for even the most experienced gun smith.  I have had the dust cover jam the action 3 different times on my rifle, so I had the gun smith remove it completely during the last repair.
If you are shopping for a rifle, buy a Remington 700 bolt action and stay away from the 7400.
