 The Gauley River is a whitewater hotspot on the east coast, it is also very scenic. New River Inn is a wonderful spot to get some rest, and unsurprisingly Bend Branch is a gorgeous stream that is worth stopping at. Area that you need to camp here for a while, ACE Adventure Center is a nice place for that; close by Sweetwood Hollow is a delightful spot to go. Mill Creek is a good spot to explore; whitewater paddling is perfect on Piney Creek.
Don't forget to take a pleasant little trip to Hickory Branch, and there's some interesting stuff to see at Unnamed Tributary Barren Branch Dam in the vicinity of Gauley River National Recreation Area. Get drenched paddling on New River, and if you came to camp Appalachian Wildwaters Campground is a tremendous place to do that. Fun pursuits are abundant; there's always something
 
to please everyone. You just can't imagine the amount of outdoors enjoyable stuff the area near Gauley River National Recreation Area has to offer.
Gauley River National Recreation Area really is in the middle of a picturesque outdoors paradise. Dry warm beds await you at Quality Inn Beckley; some of the water nearby flows, like Adkins Branch. Gauley River National Recreation Area gets a large amount of water; July is the wettest month with most rain; October is the month with the least moisture. What a site this is for outdoors folks. Arbuckle Creek is a magnificent whitewater spot in close proximity to Gauley River National Recreation Area, and if you need a place to stay Holiday Inn Oakhill/New River Gorge, Wv is a fine choice.
Bluestone National Scenic River is a great national park, and if you don't mind getting covered with water, you can always go whitewater paddling on New River. At Gauley River National Recreation Area during the months of summer highs are in the 80's; the night is somewhat cooler of course, usually in the 60's. The wintertime brings highs down to the 40's, and nighttime lows in the 20's for Gauley River National Recreation Area.

The 25 miles of free-flowing Gauley River and the six miles of the Meadow River pass through scenic gorges and valleys containing a wide variety of natural and cultural features. The Gauley River contains several class V+ rapids, making it one of the most adventurous white water boating rivers in the east.

TRAVEL BASICS

Operating Hours, Seasons
The area is open year round. The official Gauley boating season is from early September through mid October. Boating is occasionally possible at other times, depending on water releases from Summersville Dam.

Getting There
PLANE - The largest airport is at Charleston, about 65 miles from Summersville. There are also small airports at Summersville and Beckley.

CAR - From Route 19 take Route 129 West at Mount Nebo. The river access area is reached by taking the second left after you cross over the dam on Route 129.

Getting Around
At the present time, the only public access to the Gauley River National Recreation Area is just downstream of Summersville Dam.

CAMPING

Gauley Tailwaters
Open All Year
This primitive camping area at the downstream end of the Summersville Dam tailwaters parking lot has about 18 sites with fire rings. They are suitable for RV's as well as tents. There are no hookups and no water. A vault toilet is located nearby.
