Gauley River National Recreation Area, West Virginia   The Gauley River is a whitewater hotspot on the east coast, it is also very scenic. There are many cool pastimes to please everybody. You'll need more than a day to explore everything Gauley River National Recreation Area has to offer, you can camp at Lake Stephens Campground, and Bluestone National Scenic River is a good local destination. It's a nice idea Recreation Area sees pretty high levels of rain; the month with most of the rain is July, and October is when it's the driest. A great place for whitewater paddling next to Gauley River National Recreation Area is Arbuckle Creek; after a long day outdoors Days Inn of Mount Hope is a great spot to spend a night or two. Camping at Gauley River National Recreation Area is good fun, Drift-a-bit white water is a good local campground, and after a long day outdoors Quality Inn Beckley is a wonderful place to spend a night or two. Gauley River National Recreation   Area is a great location for a trip when you need to spend some time in the wilderness. At Gauley River National Recreation Area you find plenty of outdoors recreation, so you may have a ball during your stay. And that's not all you can do here at Gauley River National Recreation Area. There's some flowing water nearby, Bend Branch is a stream you can pop by during your stay; you can run the rapids of Dunloup Creek. That right there is loads already, but it goes on; Gauley River National Recreation Area has it all. Why not camp at Passages To Adventure Campground if you're here at Gauley River National Recreation Area; Gauley River National Recreation Area is not far at all from Glen Jean. Sugar Creek flows through this vicinity; Sweetwood Hollow is around here, and is a perfect location. High temperatures at Gauley River National Recreation Area throughout the summer are in the 80's. For the period of the moonlight hours it's commonly in the 60's. The wintertime brings highs down to the 40's, and winter nights come with lows in the 20's to Gauley River National Recreation Area. Camping is available at Mountain State Travel and Trl Pr, and New River Inn is a great location to get some rest. The 25 miles of free-flowing Gauley River and the six miles of the Meadow River pass through scenic gorges and valleys containing a wide variety of natural and cultural features. The official Gauley boating season is from early September through mid October. Boating is occasionally possible at other times, depending on water releases from Summersville Dam. Getting There PLANE - The largest airport is at Charleston, about 65 miles from Summersville. There are also small airports at Summersville and Beckley. CAR - From Route 19 take Route 129 West at Mount Nebo. The river access area is reached by taking the second left after you cross over the dam on Route 129. Getting Around At the present time, the only public access to the Gauley River National Recreation Area is just downstream of Summersville Dam. CAMPING Gauley Tailwaters Open All Year This primitive camping area at the downstream end of the Summersville Dam tailwaters parking lot has about 18 sites with fire rings. They are suitable for RV's as well as tents. There are no hookups and no water. A vault toilet is located nearby.
