Lake close to Catoctin Mountain Park, it's a delightful lake; unsurprisingly Bear Branch flows through this neighborhood. Hunting Creek Lake is a nearby lake that you could go to, and Cunningham Falls State Park is a perfect local campground. If only every site had this much outdoors
entertaining stuff, what a great earth it would be. Paddling on Hunting Creek is so much fun, and Chimney Rock is striking and can be seen from here. There are plenty of folks from Thurmont here at Catoctin Mountain Park, and William Houck Campground is a brilliant campground
nearby. The warmest time of the year at Catoctin Mountain Park comes with high temperatures in the 80's. Once the sun is down it descends down to the 60's. For the period of the winter highs are in the 30's, and winter nights come with lows in the 10's to Catoctin Mountain Park.
At Catoctin Mountain Park you find a heap of outdoors recreation, so you could have a heap of fun. You simply have to have a look at Wolf Rock if you're here at Catoctin Mountain Park, and Muddy Run is one of the streams close by that might be worth visiting. The panorama of
Cat Rock from Catoctin Mountain Park is charming; there are some great whitewater spots on Middle creek.
In the 1930's, after years of making charcoal to fuel the iron furnace, mountain farming, and harvesting of trees for timber, land was purchased to be transformed
into a productive recreation area; helping to put people back to work during the great depression. Beginning in 1935, the Catoctin Recreational Demonstration Area was under construction by both the Works Progress Administration and the Civilian Conservation Corps. Originally
planned to provide recreational camps for federal employees, one of the camps eventually became the home of the Presidential retreat, Camp David. The Presidential retreat is not open or accessible to the public, but the eastern hardwood forest of Catoctin Mountain Park has many
other attractions for visitors: camping, picnicking, fishing, 25 miles of hiking trails, scenic mountain vistas, all await your exploration. CONTACTS Email - CATO_Superintendent@nps.gov Fax- 301-271-2764
