  Could anyone let me know what kind of ducks are around Assateague near thanksgiving? Says Justin

I would like my 9 year old grandson to have a hunter safety course.  We live on Chincoteague Island and his grandfather would be taking him duck hunting.  Is there such a class and where and when would it be. Says Roxanne Hill

Assateague Point is near Assateague Island National Seashore
and is a splendid site to go to; swamps like Black Narrows Marsh are fun to explore. Assateague Island National Seashore has great outdoors recreation, so you can have a lot of fun. If you like swamps, you're in luck, Black Narrows is right close by, and dry warm beds await you at Waterside Inn.
Some of the water nearby flows, like Black Duck Creek, and a brilliant close by hotel is Hampton Inn Suites ChincoteagueWaterfront VA. A lake nearby is Wallops Pond; if you need a location to stay Comfort Suites Chincoteague is a good choice. There's so much

Assateague Point is near Assateague Island National Seashore
everybody loves. Black Point is nearby and always perfect to go to, and Assateague Island National Seashore is a tremendous place to visit for more than one day, Campers Ranch is a tremendous place to camp nearby. So much entertaining stuff close to Assateague Island National Seashore, absolutely astonishing. After a long day outdoors Lighthouse Inn is a splendid site to spend a night or two, and swing by Eel Creek it's a great site to stop at.
Lots of precipitation falls at Assateague Island National Seashore; August is the month that gets the
 
most rain while November is frequently the driest month. Wallops Pond is a nearby lake that you could pop by, and if you came to camp Pine Grove Campground is a magnificent location to do that. There are swamps here too; Horse Marsh is in the vicinity, and do schedule some time to take a look at Blake Cove if you have a chance.
If you need a site to stay Birchwood Motel Chincoteague is a great choice, and during your visit here you'll meet some people from Chincoteague Island for sure. High temperatures at Assateague Island National Seashore through the warm days of summer are in the 80's, and throughout the night it cools down to the 60's. Through the winter the highs are frequently in the 40's; after the sun is down throughout the winter temperatures at Assateague Island National Seashore descend into the 20's. Yep, outdoors enjoyable stuff to do are in fact bountiful here at Assateague Island National Seashore. Getting to Sheepshead Creek from Assateague Island National Seashore is uncomplicated, and you can stay the night at Toms Cove Park.
Smalley Drain is an attention-grabbing swamp in the vicinity of Assateague Island National Seashore; since you're here, you could also stop by beautiful Big Millpond. Do stop by Beasey Pond near Assateague Island National Seashore, it's a pretty lake; you can hit the beach if you want, Wallops Beach is practically right here. Having a great time at Assateague Island National Seashore is simple. Why not stop at Mud Bay also since you're here, and on a good day it's a good idea to spend the day at Bow Beach.
A scenic lake like Hairy Head Pond close to Assateague Island National Seashore is a delightful place to explore; swamps like Middle Mouth in the vicinity of Assateague Island National Seashore make for great places to stop at. Take a hike on the Ragged Point Trail, and Assateague Island National Seashore is perfect enough to spend more than a day at, Trails End Campground Resort is a perfect local campground. Assateague Island National Seashore has beautiful nature scenery for you to take pleasure in.


Three agencies administer Assateague, a windswept barrier island that offers many opportunities for seashore recreation and nature study along its thirty-seven miles. Ocean swimming, camping, bayside canoeing, crabbing, clamming, hunting, surf fishing, and off-road vehicle use are all popular.

The famous wild horses roam throughout and share beach to bay habitats with a host of other animals, including over 300 species of birds.

Assateague Island became part of the National Park System in 1965. The park's land and water boundaries encompass over 48,000 acres in the states of Maryland and Virginia.

TRAVEL BASICS

Operating Hours, Seasons
Maryland District - open year round, 24 hours a day. Barrier Island Visitor Center open 9 am - 5 pm every day except Thanksgiving and Christmas. Virginia District - January-March: 6 am - 6 pm. April: 6 am - 8 pm. May-September: 5 am - 10 pm. October: 6 am - 8 pm. November-December: 6 am - 6 pm. Visitor centers open 9 am - 4 pm every day except Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Getting There
PLANE - The closest airports are Ocean City Municipal Airport (410-213-2471) and Salisbury-Wicomico County Regional Airport (410-548-4827).

CAR - There are two entrances to Assateague Island National Seashore. Assateague's north entrance is at the end of Route 611, eight miles south of Ocean City, MD. The south entrance is at the end of Route 175, two miles from Chincoteague, VA. There is no vehicle access between the two entrances on Assateague Island. Vehicles must return to the mainland to access either the north or south entrance.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION - No public transportation available.

Weather & Climate
Summers are generally hot and humid. Mosquitos and ticks are abundant from spring through autumn. Insect repellent and/or protective clothing is recommended. Rarely snows in the winter but often a damp cold. Sturdy hiking shoes recommended for long walks in the sand and hard sole water shoes for wading in bay waters.

Accessibility
All visitor centers, most nature trails, bathhouses and wayside exhibits are accessible. The seashore has established two accessible campsites which may be reserved. Beach wheelchairs with balloon tires are available for use on the oceanside beaches in Maryland and Virginia.

Getting Around
In Maryland, four miles of paved roads include an adjacent bike path. 'Life of Assateague' self-guided trails interpret three different barrier island habitats. In Virginia, five miles of paved roads include a bike path and fifteen miles of trails wind through refuge marshes and forests, including a path to the Assateague lighthouse. Hikers can enjoy miles of beaches on both the Maryland and Virginia sides of the island.

Visitors to the Maryland district of Assateague Island may enjoy a variety of camping opportunities. The National Park Service provides year round camping in oceanside and bayside campgrounds. These campgrounds are first-come, first-served from October 16 through April 14 ($12.00/night). Reservations are recommended April 15 through October 15 ($16.00/night). For backcountry camping enthusiasts, two oceanside and four bayside sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis for visitors who wish to backpack or paddle the island. A $5 backcountry permit is required and is only issued during business hours. There is no camping in the Virginia District of Assateague Island.
