Saint Croix National Scenic River
The St. Croix National Scenic Riverway consists of the Namekagon and St. Croix Rivers providing 252 miles of recreational opportunities. The Riverway is one of the intial rivers designated under the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act of 1968. The Lower St. Croix was added in 1972. The Riverway is a unique area with a diversity of habitat, which provides many opportunities for viewing wildlife. A variety of recreational activities can be enjoyed in this picturesque setting. The upper stretches are ideal for canoeists, the rivers are shallow and narrow with some rapids. The lower stretches broaden and widen and can be used by boats. TRAVEL BASICS
Operating Hours, Seasons Landings and campsites are open year round. Headquarters Visitor Center is open daily May through September and is open Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., October through April. The other visitor centers are open during the summer with limited hours off-season. Getting There PLANE - Minneapolis/St. Paul or Duluth are the nearest airports. CAR - Minnesota Hwy 95 and Wisconsin Hwy 35 parallel the lower stretches. Wisconsin Hwy 63 the upper stretches. Crossings at I-94, Hwy 8, Hwy 70,and Hwy 77/48. PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION - Taxi or bus to Stillwater, MN from Minneapolis/St. Paul MN. Weather & Climate Summer are hot and humid with temperatures in the high 80's. Thunderstorms are common in the summer. Winters are severe, with heavy snowfall and sub-zero temperatures. Accessibility All visitor centers are accessible. The Indianhead hiking trail in St. Croix Falls, WI is accessible. Some picnic area and campsites are accessible, please contact visitor centers for details. Getting Around Personal vehicle, canoe, kayak, powerboat, or tour boats. FEES/PERMITS
Entrance Fee NO FEES Free! There are no entrance or use fees at St. Croix NSR. A Special Use Permit may be required for certain activities.
CAMPING
Primitive Sites Open All Year Primitive campsites are available. There is a one night limit at all campsites above Nevers Dam and you must camp at designated sites. There is a seven day limit at all sites below Nevers Dam to Stillwater,MN. Most campsites are only accessible by water-craft. Some sites are appropriate for groups. Sites are available on a first-come first-serve basis. No fees or permits are required.

Visitor Centers HEADQUARTERS VISITOR CENTER Open All Year Summer Hours: 5/25/01 To 9/3/01 8:30-5:00 M-Th; 8:30-6:00 Fri-Sun Phone - 715-483-3284 x638 Location - On the river, one block west of Hwy. 87 just north of the business district in St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin. Special Programs - Available on request: 12 minute movie, 5 minute slide show and videos. Exhibits - Birds of prey, logging, early settlement, geology and winter exhibits. Touch table, has things from nature to see up close. Available Facilities - Auditorium where movies/slides and videos are available. Eastern National book sales area. Restrooms and drinking fountain. Picnic tables and brook trout pond outside.
MARSHLAND VISITOR CENTER Summer Hours: 5/25/01 To 9/3/01 1:00-7:00 Fri ; 10:00-6:30 Sat; 1:00-5:00 Sun Phone - 320-629-2148 Location - Junction of Highway 70 and St. Croix River west of Grantsburg, WI on MN side. Exhibits - Song birds, mussels, and insects. Changing exhibit highlighting student artwork based on Riverway wildlife. Available Facilities - Restrooms Auditorium Eastern National book sales area.
NAMEKAGON VISITOR CENTER Summer Hours: 5/25/01- 9/3/01 10:00 AM to 6:30 PM Phone - 715-635-8346 Location - Highway 63 just north of juncture with highway 53 in the town of Trego. Exhibits - During summer months there is an aquarium with native fish to observe. Logging, fur trade and a tracks exhibits plus a mounted bear. A touch table gives a close up view at things from nature. Available Facilities - Restrooms and drinking fountain. Eastern National book sales area.
