Spring Valley Reservoir
 | I agree. Spring Valley Reservoir needs some work. Docks need a few boards replaced and some deck screws. The fish cleaning station was crushed by heavy snow and remains in a pile of broken wood. Old burn piles need cleaned up. The water system needs repaired. Very bad....Spring Valley Reservoir has been a place I have visited since I was a young child and now I have introduced it to my children. Unfortunately the past few times I have visted the reservoir it has increasingly become more and more of a disappointment. Although there are ''camp hosts'' that are designated for the area they are not available and the swim beach, restrooms, trails are littered and vandalized. When we have used the area for camping there have been individuals speeding in and out of the park, partying all hours of the night and the camp hosts do not intervene. I have yet to see them interact with guest of Spring Valley nor have I seen them working on the area. I assume that they are being allowed to live there without costs in trade for taking care of and monitoring the area. I think this should be reviewed by the State especially if our tax dollars are going for upkeep and care of this valuable and beautiful reservoir.... |

The local ski pioneers chose Lookout Pass because of the abundant snowfall and excellent snow quality which they could access by jumping on the Northern Pacific railcars as they proceeded east from the mining towns of Wallace and Mullan, Idaho. These ski adventurers would hop off the railcars at the summit and utilize a highway storage shed as a warming hut

...rth Mountain Resort. The completion of Cy?s Hut in 1936 and a rope tow in 1939 firmly established winter recreation on Chewelah Peak. Cy?s Hut burned in 1949. After the completion of the two story Chewelah Mountain Lodge in 1950 and installation of a double chair lift in 1951, the area experienced an increased volume of recreational users and tourists. Over a period of years, obsolescence of the lift and lack of revenue due to a gradual decline in the condition of the facilities, culminating in closure in early 1968.
On May 6, 1970, the Chewelah Basin Ski Corporation was formed and submitted a bid to develop and operate a ski resort in a basin approximately two miles east of the old area. Development commenced in late 1970 and continued during the summers of 1971 and 1972. Construction of three lifts, runs and a day lodge was completed and the area first operated for public use in late 1972.
