Petty Lake
I had a great aunt who lived on Pretty Lake from the late 1930s to the late 1970s. I spent many summers there, and I loved it; this was in the late 50s to mid-late 60s. In the winter of 1959, we had a Corvair, and my mother drove it out onto the middle of the lake; it was frozen that far down. She and my aunt were ice fishing. I was a teen in the 60s, and I heard Sonny and Cher's ''I Got You Babe'' for the first time while laying on a wooden raft anchored in the lake from the porch of a cottage on shore. There used to be an entertainment area known as ''Merkling's Beach'', which had diving boards, rafts, and a 96-step water toboggan slide the you could rent the ''sleds'' for 50 cents for half an hour. What fun it was. I remember my cousin hunting a lot, and my aunt would have fried fish, turtle, deer, and homegrown foods due to the fertility of the land. I've not been back there in over 20 years, but a flood of warm, wonderful memories came when I returned....

Swiss Valley
40 miles away 3 PHOTOS Swiss Valley is a great place to ski or snowboard, dedicated to keeping the terrain interesting and excellently groomed. Snowmaking and deicated staff also provide the best kept terrain parks in southwest Michigan. The facilities offer a full service restaurant with food, spirits and live enteratinment most weekends, a cafeteria, group gathering areas and a separate learning area. Swiss Valley also has very affordable learn to ski and snowboard programs for the entire family.... it is pretty good...
Timber Ridge
56 miles away It is not very big, but all of the employees are cool and you never have to wait in line to get on the lift. They sometimes seem to overestimate the amount of snow that they have also. I sometimes wonder if they actually measure the snowpiles that have been plowed in the parking lot instead of what is actually on the hill....
Bittersweet
59 miles away Bittersweet has enormous snow-making capacity and is consistently the first to open in SW Michigan. Their vertical is only 350 ft, but that's about 100 more than any other resort in SW Michigan. As noted, their lift system is impressive, particularly the high speed detachable quad, but lines can get a little long on late December weekends. Their terrain park has a good variety of boxes, jumps, etc. Very friendly people....Yea you guys rock i love the snow...Ahh yes, Bittersweet Ski Area... Michigan skiing at it's very best. The drops in these part of the country are not that impressive but I think Bittersweet makes the most of it. I do recommend this ski area....In my oppinion Bittersweet ski area of Michigan is quite a good place for a bit of winter fun. I must say the lift system is quite impressive for a resort this size and everything is well maintained. It's quite a pleasure to come here to ski....
Cannonsburg
85 miles away This is like a local little ski hill but places like Cannonsburg are good when you really gotta go skiing for a few hours. It's not like Colorado but it's nice to get your ski muscles warmed up a bit and suck in some refreshing winter air....
