Holston River
 | Be sure if you go down this river that you check TVA.GOV for the generating schedule. It is a really good river to go down if they have generated for an hour or two. If you start the river before or right after the start generating you will run out of water. You will be draging your kayak before you know it. So remember give the water a little time to get ahead of you and you will have a great time. If you are wanting to start a little further down river the water moves about 3 mph from the time they start generating. Have a good time.... |

The Bee Cliff Rapids are also for some reason (mistaken or purposely) referred by some North Carolina-based rafting companies to their customers as the 'Anaconda Rapids' - if you are not aware of this fact, you may end up paying significantly more for a rafting trip on this section of the Watauga River. The Tennessee Valley Authority releases the seasonally scheduled impounded resevoir water from the TVA Wilbur Dam at approximately 1:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday (the main input is just below Wilbur Dam and southeast of Elizabethton, Tennessee). This picture was submitted to me by Lynda Hubbard ( now retired ) of the Clinch Ranger District of the U.S. Forest Service in Wise, Virginia; a few years ago. It is of the upper falls on Little Stony Creek. I have been doing climate research in this area of the great High Knob massif, for some 20 years. This is a high precipitation area on average. It should be understood that the High Knob massif forms a sprawling highcountry area along the Wise-Scott border ( into extreme NE Lee County ), and from base to base represents the widest mountain mass in all of southwestern Virginia. This great width impacts precipitation, with significant enhancements across the mid-upper elevations during favorable patterns ( unlike 2007 which has been the driest year on record with a general 40-46'' across the upper elevations so far ).... |
