Going for a horse ride at close by Cade's Cove Riding Stables is always a fun thing to do. Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a magnificent local destination here at Fontana Dam Shelter - Appalachian Trail, and you'll perhaps meet some people from Fontana Dam here.
