  Lums Pond State Park
Bear, Delaware
Open Daily 8 a. M. To Sunset

Lums Pond State Park is built around the largest freshwater pond in Delaware. The park features excellent fishing, sports facilities, hiking trails and more on its 1790 acres on the north side of the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal. Lums Pond itself covers 200 acres, and although there is no swimming allowed, boat rentals and fishing provide water-bound recreation in the summer months. A boat launching ramp and two piers allow easy access to the water.

Before the pond
existed, St. Georges Creek flowed through the hardwood forest and was the site of several Native American hunting camps. The creek was dammed in the early 1800's when the C & D canal was built. Water from the pond was used to fill the locks of the canal and power a small mill.
This area was first used as a state park in 1963.

Hikers have the opportunity to explore a variety of habitats along the 7. 5 mile Swamp Forest Trail circling the pond. Lums also features over 10 miles of multi-purpose trails (horses, bikes, hikers, and snowmobiles). The Whale Wallow Nature Center hosts a variety of programs for visitors during the summer season (Nature Center will be open daily from noon-6 p. M. From Memorial Day to Labor Day. ). For outdoor dining, picnic areas are scattered throughout the park, and three pavilions can be reserved

for larger groups.

Ball fields and game courts abound at Lums Pond State Park. Choose friendly competition in baseball, softball, football, soccer, tennis, basketball, or volleyball. Sharpen your skill in horseshoes or disc golf. Equipment rentals are available during the summer season. Children can work off their excess energy on the playground.

As the weather grows colder, winter activities include hiking, year-round camping, cross country skiing, and snowmobiling. Hunting is also permitted, but consult the park office for maps and regulations.

Lums Pond State Park also includes the Summit North Marina on the Canal. This modern facility offers private slips for 250 boats and fuel sales, boat storage and repair services.

Whether you choose athletics, nature study, water sports, or simple relaxation, Lums Pond State Park offers each visitor a wide variety of opportunities to enjoy quality leisure time.

With so many choices for outdoor recreation, you may decide to stay for awhile. The 68-site campground offers modern showers, a dumping station, picnic tables and grills. The sites are all large and six of them now have electric hookups.

Yurts
Yurts have also been introduced to the park. Yurts are round stationary structures with rigid cloth walls that feature: a single and double bed bunked together, a double size futon, and electric. A large outdoor deck and seating area, along with grill and water, gives you the rustic feel of camping outdoors with amenities not found in a tent. Perfect for the new camper in your family.

Finally, unique to Delaware State Parks, Lums Pond offers 4 horse campsites. Riders can enjoy a getaway without the need for daily trailering!
