There are some pleasant whitewater spots on Grande Ronde River; a great spot like Red Bridge State Park is too great to leave out. There's no way someone can get bored here in the Blue Mountains. You'll meet a lot of people from La Grande here, and don't leave without going to Hilgard Junction State Park.
