Pine Hills Campground, Illinois
| | Pine Hills Campground is the place to go when exploring the Shawnee National Forest. Finding the campground can be difficult, but easy if you have a topographic atlas. It is located adjacent to Illinois largest wilderness complex, nothing significant on a grand scale, but a world away from the madness of Chicago at the opposite end of the state. It is between ILL routes 3 and 127 between Grand Tower and Trail of Tears state forest. I'm sorry to say I cannot share the best site in the campsround, but will probably find it yourself without much effort. It |
is at the back of the loop adjacent to the stream. I basically gave it away, but good hunting still! Actually, it can be difficult to find, but well worth the solitude. Good wildlife viewing in the area, especially near the LaRue Swamp area- many hawks can be seen in this perennial
| spring fed wetland. It is the Mississippi River Valley in a natural state- a remnant of it, at least. Says John Sarychoff
Here at Pine Hills Campground you can spot McGee Hill, and there's whitewater on Piney Branch River for all you adrenaline junkies. This is such a lovely campground. Trail of Tears State Park is a tremendous place to stretch your legs a bit. Lakes are brilliant; Wolf Lake is a lake that's next to Pine Hills Campground. During the warm months here at Pine Hills Campground, high temperatures generally reach the 90's, and throughout | |
the night it cools down to the 60's. The winter brings highs down to the 40's with winter lows in the 10's overnight here at Pine Hills Campground. A great deal of rainfall falls at Pine Hills Campground; throughout May this area sees the most rain, and January meanwhile is the
driest month. During your journey to Pine Hills Campground you'll meet some people from Wolf Lake for sure, and whitewater paddling is not for everybody but if it's for you then, we recommend Little Grassy Creek. While you're here at Pine Hills Campground you can take a hike along the Opossum Trot Trail.
