Hiking is a popular thing to do around Stampede Campground; Mount Rose Trail is a tremendous local trail; since you're here you will meet lots of folks from close by Truckee. A number of people opt for Stampede Campground in order to be in close proximity to Donner Memorial State Park.
Stampede Campground is right by the Cottonwood Fisherman Trail, and a great place for whitewater paddling is Truckee River. So many cool things to do in the Northern Sierra Nevada, not sufficient time. Donner Memorial State Park is a gorgeous location any time of year, and if you like skiing, you're in luck; Northstar at Tahoe is reasonably near.
