Belknap Campground, Southern Sierra Nevada, California Custom Search   (?) The Kern river is well over an hour's drive away. But Belknap is a beautiful campground, a rare opportunity to camp at the base of ancient redwood trees that tower 100's of feet above the campground. The main activity is hiking the Summit Trail (10 miles, round trip) to Quaking Aspen. This takes you through one of the larger of the last remaining Giant Sequoia Groves that make this area famous. The Tule River, which runs through the camp ground,       is stocked with rainbow trout during the summer months, making fishing a very popular visitor activity. A quaint general store, bar and restaurant is available about 1 mile away in charming Camp Nelson. During winter months, hwy   190 is closed about 9 miles beyond Camp Nelson at Ponderosa. Winter recreationists enjoy this area for the snow mobiling, x-country skiing, and snow shoeing opportunities. Belknap is open year-round, but winter brings storms and sub-freezing conditions. The road to the campground is not always plowed. Rooms are available at the Camp Nelson Lodge (www.campnelsonlodge.com) and at nearby Pierpoint Springs Resort (www.pierpointsprings.com).
