There's a tremendous 12-mile-long type I-II whitewater segment on Catawba River nearby, the Route 1234 Bridge to US Route 221 Bridge segment. This segment of Catawba   River is suggested for beginner paddlers. Kayak paddling may become hazardous, so check current conditions before heading out. Mount Mitchell State Park is a gorgeous site any time of year; at Catawba Falls Campground you always meet someone from Old Fort. Life's too short to enjoy all the entertaining things in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
