For the past three years I've stayed and Pike Peak RV Park (PPRVP) because of its proximity to the Peaks Peak Ascent starting line and other attractions in Manitou Springs. It has become an annual family event to meet in Manitou Springs and race Pikes Peak. Unfortunately, my last stay (Aug 2008) at PPRVP
went from good to bad. My father had parked in the wrong spot in the overflow parking area of the morning of the Pikes Peak Ascent race, and the owner had asked him to move his car to another location and said we would have to pay
| | extra. This was new to me, so I proceeded to ask the owner if the policy had changed, and this was his response, ''I'm the owner, and I make the rules, and if you don't like it, you can leave!'' I was absolutely shocked and upset, so I then said ''maybe I should let the chamber of commerce know of this. '' And he told me to pack up and leave now! It was 6:10 am in the morning, and my wife was still sleeping in the camper, and the race started in 50 minutes. I was screwed.
A few minutes later, the owner cooled off and eventually decided to let me stay in PPRVP, and he allowed my father to park his car in the overflow area without charge, but the inappropriate behavior by this owner
|
stayed with me all day and left a bad taste in my mouth.
Later in the day, my wife was driving out of the park, and she was stopped by the front desk personnel and given a yellow sheet. The yellow sheet is the park's version of a warning slip.
Basically, if we were told to slow down again, we would have to leave the PPRVP immediately. This was absurd because we have three small boys, and we are very conscious of our driving speeds around children. Plus the park is so small
that you can't drive fast. Now it is quite obvious that we were being singled out by the owners.
My wife and I could not stay another night because it just didn't feel right. It felt like we were staying with people that didn't
want us around. I had paid in full (PPRVP rule) for three nights, and we had two more nights to go. At the front desk, I requested a refund for my last night since we decided to leave due to the fact that we were not happy with our
stay. The refund was denied, and I was told that this is how they run their business.
In summary, I would say the only benefit of PPRVP is its location to downtown Manitou Springs, but the owners are psychotic! I've been in
the hospitality business, mainly hotel, for several years and have never experienced or heard of such inappropriate behavior by a business. On their website, PPRVP has this posting: ''Tradition, honesty & integrity is our way of life.
'' This is an absolute lie! Hidden owner rules seem to appear out of the blue after you've already paid in full, and they have a ''No Refund'' policy even if you are a dissatisfied customer. I'll be staying elsewhere in 2009. Says John Kehmeier (Sun, 17 Aug 2008)
