In       the region of two and a half days is something like the magnitude of time you must have to backcountry trek the Mount Whitney Trail, a tough wilderness trail. You're sure to come across some friendly people from Independence here,   and why not visit nearby Oak Creek if you're here at Fort Independence Campground. Good hiking is available along the Pacific Crest Trail - section 11; if you're a golfer then a perfect nearby course is MT Whitney Golf Course. This is truly a good campground.
