Big Stony - Mountain Fork
17 miles away
I have been doing climate research on the High Knob massif, the great landform upon which many of these whitewater runs are listed for in Wise-Scott counties of Virginia, for some 20 years. This is a high precipitation area ( although 2007 has been the driest on record with 40''-46'' so far ) that tends to average 60''-70'' per year amid the mid-upper elevations ( 2500-3000+ feet ) along the Wise-Scott border. The city of Norton has been found to be the wettest town or city in Virginia over the long term, with an annual average during the 1983-2004 period of 57.54'' per year ( and that with some missing data during the winter months prior to 1999 ). Thought you would be interested in this information, since not alot of data is available on this area....

Little Stony Creek

This picture was submitted to me by Lynda Hubbard ( now retired ) of the Clinch Ranger District of the U.S. Forest Service in Wise, Virginia; a few years ago. It is of the upper falls on Little Stony Creek. I have been doing climate research in this area of the great High Knob massif, for some 20 years. This is a high precipitation area on average. It should be understood that the High Knob massif forms a sprawling highcountry area along the Wise-Scott border ( into extreme NE Lee County ), and from base to base represents the widest mountain mass in all of southwestern Virginia. This great width impacts precipitation, with significant enhancements across the mid-upper elevations during favorable patterns ( unlike 2007 which has been the driest year on record with a general 40-46'' across the upper elevations so far )....

Powell River - South Fork
19 miles away
I've been recording climate data in this area for 2 decades. The South Fork of the Powell River Gorge is one of the deepest chasms in all of Virginia, being 2000 vertical feet deep. It drains the highcountry southwest of the Big Cherry Basin of the High Knob massif...the greatest landform of far southwestern Virginia that sprawls across southern Wise County, northern Scott County, and into the extreme northeastern end of Lee County. This is a high precipitation area; although, 2007 has been the driest on record with 40-46'' across the upper elevations ( if you will check that is still above the annual average of many places in Virginia )....

Watauga
21 miles away
...stomers as the 'Anaconda Rapids' - if you are not aware of this fact, you may end up paying significantly more for a rafting trip on this section of the Watauga River. The Tennessee Valley Authority releases the seasonally scheduled impounded resevoir water from the TVA Wilbur Dam at approximately 1:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday (the main input is just below Wilbur Dam and southeast of Elizabethton, Tennessee). This section of the Watauga River that flows through Elizabethton (Carter County) and is a popular commercial destination for both commercial rafting and fishing float tour companies from both eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina choosing to run this section of the Watauga River as many naturally flowing rivers in this Northeast Tennessee region (such as the Nolichucky River in Unicoi County, Tennessee ) are very dependent upon regular rainfall during the hot summer months. There is limited parking available at the one TVA parking lot by the putin entrance and at the at the Carter County owned putin itself. The water temperature of the Watauga River is around 52 de...

Holston River
24 miles away
Be sure if you go down this river that you check TVA.GOV for the generating schedule. It is a really good river to go down if they have generated for an hour or two. If you start the river before or right after the start generating you will run out of water. You will be draging your kayak before you know it. So remember give the water a little time to get ahead of you and you will have a great time. If you are wanting to start a little further down river the water moves about 3 mph from the time they start generating. Have a good time....
