Nantahala River
 | Be Aware! The Nanty is a bottom-release river - meaning that the water you're in has been sitting at the bottom of a lake for a while, totally unexposed to sunshine. The result: 50 degrees F, year-round. It may be 90 and sunny out, but it's a different story in the water - dress appropriately!... |

Cable Cove Campground
 | 10 miles away Great campground. Not too big (20 sites?), rarely full. Large tent pads, fire rings with grill tops, a separate charcoal grill, picnic tables, and sometimes 2 lantern posts are set on spacious lots set far off the road with most parking areas big enough to accomidate large RV's. Access to campground and boat ramp is paved the whole way. Water and a primative flush toilet provided. Camping close to the entrance may include noises from the pumphouse at night. Only a quarter mile from boat ramp on one of the most beautiful sections of Lake Fontana. Great canoe-camping. The interpretive trail is probably a little over a mile long. Extensive hiking, mountain biking, and kayaking close by. Closest store is at Fontana Village, about 8 mi. away, and if they're closed, I think that the closest beer is some 30 mi. away in Bryson City. Be farwarned. PLEASE BE COURTIOUS TO OTHERS AND LEAVE BARKING DOGS AT HOME!... |
Rufus Morgan Trail
 | 11 miles away Excellent hiking trail with good access and beautiful falls. Rufus Morgan is a moderately hard short trail up to stunning 60' falls. Beautiful forest surrounds the trail. Be careful and tell someone you're going though... there's no on around for miles and if you get lost or hurt, you're on you're own. The waterfall is at the end of the trail and is easy to find. The road up to the trail is just a forest service road, but it is in great condition and there's a marked parking area (4 spots) with signage at the trailhead. We went in early August and the trail is not overgrown and in great shape.... |

Little River
 | 22 miles away Correction: The run described here is actually from the Elbow to the Y. It is incorrectly labeled Elbow to Townsend.
There is another run from the Y to Townsend, but there is a low level Dam about 2 miles from the Y that has to be portaged. This run is about 4 miles. It has Class 2+ rapids at the start and gradually gets easier till it is Class 1 as the trip approaches Townsend....This is a very scenic run. The Little River run through The Smoky Mountain National Park along Little River Road. The put-in is 2.6 miles from the Y driving towards the Sinks. You should go with a group of experience paddlers that have run this section before. There is a rapid called Mary's Rock that is Class 2+ rapid with a deadly undercut rock that has nearly trapped unaware paddlers under water. This rapid should be portage by most paddlers. Advanced paddlers should not have any difficulties making the S-turn that is required to successfully run this rapid. There are probably 8-10 Class 2 rapids to go along with the 5-6 rapids that are Class 2+ or 3. This run is is runnable in the wet season (Fall to Winter). You need a minimum 600 cfs on the Little River Maryville gauge.... |
Abrams Creek
 | 23 miles away It is extremely difficult and the rocks are large, harsh, and plentiful. There is a 15 foot waterfall 2.5 miles in and nothing around for help. Zero cellular service!! The locals say this is normally an impassable river. The only reason we were able to do some of this river is that it was two feet higher than average. Lots of downed trees that were difficult to portage. Be conscious of the wildlife threats (bears). I highly reccommend going elsewhere to this river.... |
