The Pines Campground
18 miles away I recently camped at the Pines this past weekend. It was great. The campground is very secluded and well taken care of. It's also very easy to get to from New Castle. I would recommend this campground to anyone....

18 miles away AW advises to stay off this creek till the land owner issue is resolved. thanks!...
Craig Creek
21 miles away I've never kayaked this stretch of Craig's Creek, but it is not the ONLY stretch by far! We spent 10 days in a lovely VRBO.com riverfront vacation rental downstream from New Castle, and kayaked both up and down the river multiple times, even though the area was in the middle of a bad drought. We will be renting in Roaring Run this year, which is according to the owner kayakable for the 5 miles to where it meets the James River. There is a very nice pull out/picnic spot where the two meet, and plenty of room to park. Take time out to splash around as well. I've never seen a river this clean before!...
Greenbrier River
24 miles away There is a brand new (and long needed!)river access boat and canoe slide with steps at Fort Spring that goes down to a little beach--makes it easy to get to the river. Although you have listed this stretch of the river as Class I-II, I believe others have noted that there is some Class III whitewater on the fairly challenging Rattlesnake Rapids which are about halfway(?) down the run. Many have overturned their canoes on these rapids. This is a very beautiful run on the gorgeous Greenbrier. ...
Snowshoe
40 miles away Snowshoe has the biggest elevation drop of any skiresort in the region which in my oppinion makes it a realtively great ski resort. You can get more skiing done before you have to get on the lift again. Which I think is very important in a ski resort....

Stay slopeside at the new Timberline Resort Hotel. There is live music every weekend at Timber's Pub and Fireside Grill located in the main lodge. March 20-21 is our annual Snowy Luau.
