... area is its scenic beauty and heritage. The original emigrant settlers of the area during the middle 1800’s were attracted to its virgin forests and the rich mineral content of the ground. That untouched beauty remains only in a few unique areas left over from bygone days. Paint River Hills is truly one of those areas.

The highlight of Paint River Hills Campground is its hiking trail along the Paint River. The loop trail, about half-mile long, winds through and around the rock bluffs and hills that form the banks of the Paint River and for years has been the playground of local youngsters. The name “Paint River Hills” is the term used by locals to describe the location of the campground. Youngsters have named other areas such as Peeper Hollow, Big Rock Candy Mountain, White Pine Lookout, Fairy Tale Swamp, Rock Fort, Thistle Swamp and Camel Back Lookout.

As the trail leads you to several lookouts down the river identification signs greet you naming trees in native Ojibwa as well as Latin and English. You will wind through an old white cedar stand and see rare quartz roc...

Ski Brule was voted Visitor's Choice Favorite Resort 2008 in the Midwest by visitors to OnTheSnow.com! At Ski Brule, it's all about the snow. Our promise to our guests: ''Ski Brule will provide the best possible conditions at all times.'' Ski Brule is committed to providing the best snow, the best conditions, and the longest snow season in the Midwest. Ski Brule is also dedicated to providing a family-friendly atmosphere and the best value on the snow....
Whoohoo! My local ski hill on the internet, WOW! What can I say, Brule's got straight runs and wiggly runs, hard ones and easy ones, but they're all lots of fun. I've been here more times than I can remember and I keep coming back for more and more, year after year....

Paint River
16 miles away
I just took a 30 mile trip down this river with a group of 6 and three canoes. I thought it was great overall. There are a few shallow spots where we had to get out of the boat and pull it through the water but otherwise the depth is good. As far as the quote ''pretty good campgrounds'' go, these were not easily found but can be set up in the less dense forests alongside the water. The stretch over the hemlock rapids is a bit difficult on the lower hemlock but the upper is an exciting though slightly wet ride. The overall current throughout the river is not too fast so some paddling is needed. Thats about it, this is a great river. The scenery is beautiful, and if your staying overnight the stars are miraculous, so enjoy the view. If your in the trees alot watch out for ticks, (they found me well) but other than that, enjoy the ride....

Peshtigo River

...rised to find our own personal supply of firewood already delivered to our site. All we needed was to find the matches and the children were busy readying a fire for brats and smores. While the kids prepared the meal the wife and I washed away the miles and stress of the city left behind by enjoying a soaking hot shower in the resorts large shower facility.

The next morning we all enjoyed a stroll around the campgrounds before heading up to the Rafting Facility for our scheduled noon departure for the Peshtigo River. I had rafted before, the wife and children aged 14 and 16 had not. I had experienced a trip previously in a guided 8 person raft in the Smokey Mountain area of Tennessee so I didn't expect to much excitement from a little ole river n Northern Wisconsin. Boy, was I pleasantly surprised. Not only is the Peshtigo touted as the longest most continuous stretch of W/W in the Midwest with rapids rating into the class III/IV range depending on water levels, but today because the river was running at a moderate level we all had the option of paddling our own personal Funya...

This is a 4-5 hour drive from the n/w side of Chicago . . . and *definately* worth it. Some buddies and I go up for a few days every winter and I have to say, this is the best you're going to find without doubling your driving time or hopping on an airplane....
i have lived and snowboarded in Colorado and Austria.
For the Midwest only Lutsen in Minn. can be compared!
The vertical keeps you challenged unlike the resorts in the U.P. and the rest of the Midwest! Only 3 hrs from Milwaukee!!!
love it if you are in the Midwest and can't head WEST!!!...

Nordic Mountain

...r temperatures. In the past few years Nordic Mountain has more than doubled its snowmaking capacity. The goal is to open earlier, close later, and remain open on marginal winter days. One of the biggest projects to improve snowmaking at Nordic Mountain will serve a dual purpose. The addition of a 10 million gallon snowmaking pond will not only supply more cold water for snowmaking, but in the summer of 2009 is scheduled to be made into the second wakeboard winch park in the country.
Nordic Mountain has always been considered a great place to learn. It is known as a great family hill at a very affordable price. That tradition continues while changes like improved terrain parks and new glade trails help to keep the skiers and snowboarders coming back.
Low regular prices as well as numerous specials and special events, such as $10 lift ticket Customer Appreciation Day, help to make this place affordable for the entire family.
For more information on all Nordic Mountain has to offer, as well as on the changes taking place, go online to www.nordicmountain.com or call them dire...
