Whoohoo! My local ski hill on the internet, WOW! What can I say, Brule's got straight runs and wiggly runs, hard ones and easy ones, but they're all lots of fun. I've been here more times than I can remember and I keep coming back for more and more, year after year....

...y and heritage. The original emigrant settlers of the area during the middle 1800’s were attracted to its virgin forests and the rich mineral content of the ground. That untouched beauty remains only in a few unique areas left over from bygone days. Paint River Hills is truly one of those areas.

The highlight of Paint River Hills Campground is its hiking trail along the Paint River. The loop trail, about half-mile long, winds through and around the rock bluffs and hills that form the banks of the Paint River and for years has been the playground of local youngsters. The name “Paint River Hills” is the term used by locals to describe the location of the campground. Youngsters have named other areas such as Peeper Hollow, Big Rock Candy Mountain, White Pine Lookout, Fairy Tale Swamp, Rock Fort, Thistle Swamp and Camel Back Lookout.

As the trail leads you to several lookouts down the river identification signs greet you naming trees in native Ojibwa as well as Latin and English. You will wind through an old white cedar stand and see rare quartz rock outcroppings. You will ...

Paint River

I just took a 30 mile trip down this river with a group of 6 and three canoes. I thought it was great overall. There are a few shallow spots where we had to get out of the boat and pull it through the water but otherwise the depth is good. As far as the quote ''pretty good campgrounds'' go, these were not easily found but can be set up in the less dense forests alongside the water. The stretch over the hemlock rapids is a bit difficult on the lower hemlock but the upper is an exciting though slightly wet ride. The overall current throughout the river is not too fast so some paddling is needed. Thats about it, this is a great river. The scenery is beautiful, and if your staying overnight the stars are miraculous, so enjoy the view. If your in the trees alot watch out for ticks, (they found me well) but other than that, enjoy the ride....

... short bus ride we arrived at the river where we were all given a safety and oreintation talk regarding what to expect on the river, how to paddle our crafts and what to expect and how to safely react if we should find ourselfs out of our kayaks. These guides have done this before. They are very attentive to their guests needs and apprehension. Emily, our 14 year old was quite nervous. Her apprehension was eased greatly when one of the guides gave her some personal attention during the warm-up rapids demonstrating the proper ways to paddle her boat and offering tips on how to get it off rocks she may become stuck on.

Let me say this... Thornton's guides actually do GUIDE you down the river. They appeared to set up elaborate systems and positions, stationed strategically above and below the many larger rapids ready to assist their guests at the drop of a hat, or should I say paddle, or a flip, what have you! Fortunatly only one of our party decided to ''count fish'' today as their lead guide so humorously refered to the capsize. Unfortunatly the one was me! Believe me, the rest...

This is a 4-5 hour drive from the n/w side of Chicago . . . and *definately* worth it. Some buddies and I go up for a few days every winter and I have to say, this is the best you're going to find without doubling your driving time or hopping on an airplane....
i have lived and snowboarded in Colorado and Austria.
For the Midwest only Lutsen in Minn. can be compared!
The vertical keeps you challenged unlike the resorts in the U.P. and the rest of the Midwest! Only 3 hrs from Milwaukee!!!
love it if you are in the Midwest and can't head WEST!!!...

Nordic Mountain

... The best part is tubers don't have to walk back to the top of the hill. There is a specially designed lift that tows riders back to the top of the hill while sitting in their tubes. With the addition of the park, Nordic Mountain has opened up winter recreation to everyone.
In addition to the tubing park, Nordic Mountain continues to undergo many changes and improvements-one of the biggest in snowmaking.
Nordic Mountain can make snow on 100% of its terrain including the tubing park. With the improvements in snowmaking technology, they can produce higher quality snow and do so in warmer temperatures. In the past few years Nordic Mountain has more than doubled its snowmaking capacity. The goal is to open earlier, close later, and remain open on marginal winter days. One of the biggest projects to improve snowmaking at Nordic Mountain will serve a dual purpose. The addition of a 10 million gallon snowmaking pond will not only supply more cold water for snowmaking, but in the summer of 2009 is scheduled to be made into the second wakeboard winch park in the country.
