Peshtigo River
 | 14 miles away ... arrived at the river where we were all given a safety and oreintation talk regarding what to expect on the river, how to paddle our crafts and what to expect and how to safely react if we should find ourselfs out of our kayaks. These guides have done this before. They are very attentive to their guests needs and apprehension. Emily, our 14 year old was quite nervous. Her apprehension was eased greatly when one of the guides gave her some personal attention during the warm-up rapids demonstrating the proper ways to paddle her boat and offering tips on how to get it off rocks she may become stuck on.
Let me say this... Thornton's guides actually do GUIDE you down the river. They appeared to set up elaborate systems and positions, stationed strategically above and below the many larger rapids ready to assist their guests at the drop of a hat, or should I say paddle, or a flip, what have you! Fortunatly only one of our party decided to ''count fish'' today as their lead guide so humorously refered to the capsize. Unfortunatly the one was me! Believe me, the rest of the family bro... |

Paint River
 | 26 miles away I just took a 30 mile trip down this river with a group of 6 and three canoes. I thought it was great overall. There are a few shallow spots where we had to get out of the boat and pull it through the water but otherwise the depth is good. As far as the quote ''pretty good campgrounds'' go, these were not easily found but can be set up in the less dense forests alongside the water. The stretch over the hemlock rapids is a bit difficult on the lower hemlock but the upper is an exciting though slightly wet ride. The overall current throughout the river is not too fast so some paddling is needed. Thats about it, this is a great river. The scenery is beautiful, and if your staying overnight the stars are miraculous, so enjoy the view. If your in the trees alot watch out for ticks, (they found me well) but other than that, enjoy the ride.... |
Ski Brule
 | 26 miles away 9 PHOTOS Ski Brule was voted Visitor's Choice Favorite Resort 2008 in the Midwest by visitors to OnTheSnow.com! At Ski Brule, it's all about the snow. Our promise to our guests: ''Ski Brule will provide the best possible conditions at all times.'' Ski Brule is committed to providing the best snow, the best conditions, and the longest snow season in the Midwest. Ski Brule is also dedicated to providing a family-friendly atmosphere and the best value on the snow.... Whoohoo! My local ski hill on the internet, WOW! What can I say, Brule's got straight runs and wiggly runs, hard ones and easy ones, but they're all lots of fun. I've been here more times than I can remember and I keep coming back for more and more, year after year.... |
Wolf River
 | 26 miles away I went rafting there two days ago and I had SO much fun! One rapid, called lower Dells, has cliffs on both sides and we jumped of them. If you jump make sure to jump far out (I hit my knee on a rock) and face toward the light green trees when you are jumping from the right side (when you are facing the rapids) Also, it is fun to swim Dave's Wave which is the second half of the lower Duck's Nest. Make sure to go down Big Smokey! And then pull your raft to the side of the river and go under the waterfall!! So much fun! The only bad thing was the water level was low... so we got pretty scraped up on the rocks.... |
Nordic Mountain
 | 84 miles away 9 PHOTOS ...ext level. Three terrain parks, with a beginner, intermediate, and expert park offer freestyle skiers and snowboarders everything they would expect in a top notch park. Nordic Mountain's goal is not only to have some of the best freestyle terrain in Wisconsin, but in all of the Midwest. Two glade runs offer expert skiers and boarders challenging tree skiing on some of the steepest terrain on the hill. Realizing not everyone is willing to try skiing or snowboarding, Nordic Mountain installed the StoneRidge Tubing Park in 2006. The tubing park is over 1500ft long with over 90ft of vertical drop. If has five chutes and numerous ''rollers'' that add lots of thrills for the riders approaching speeds of up to 40mph. The best part is tubers don't have to walk back to the top of the hill. There is a specially designed lift that tows riders back to the top of the hill while sitting in their tubes. With the addition of the park, Nordic Mountain has opened up winter recreation to everyone. In addition to the tubing park, Nordic Mountain continues to undergo many changes and improvem... |
Granite Peak
 | 87 miles away 5 PHOTOS This is a 4-5 hour drive from the n/w side of Chicago . . . and *definately* worth it. Some buddies and I go up for a few days every winter and I have to say, this is the best you're going to find without doubling your driving time or hopping on an airplane.... i have lived and snowboarded in Colorado and Austria. For the Midwest only Lutsen in Minn. can be compared! The vertical keeps you challenged unlike the resorts in the U.P. and the rest of the Midwest! Only 3 hrs from Milwaukee!!! love it if you are in the Midwest and can't head WEST!!!... |
