Sixmile River

I did 6 mile this summer, what a rush!!! Some things to know... it is a series of three canyons, the first two are considered more class IV but the third canyon is definitley class V. There are two companies that operate on the river, Chugach Outdoor and Nova. I went with Chugach but I hear that they are both good. I reccomend (and give an AWA, shout out to) the guides ''Pizza'' and ''Charlie'' from Chugach outdoor, great people! The canyons are very narrow. Oh and the last thing. You have to wear a dry suit and complete a swim test wearing it (in the river) before you can go. The water is frigid and there is no room for error. Make sure to get a suit with a good neck gasket. Took the hike from the Seward highway and it was a very well maintained trail and good parking lot with even bathrooms. The hike was very intense and switch backed multiple times. Tiny streams cross your path. Once up top it is beautiful. After some time walking threw the alpine, you come across a trail which to the left take you to the lake and to the right takes you to the bear box and camping area. It's a stocked lake so bring your rod.... |

I think Alyeska has the highest elevation drop in Alaska but I could be wrong. Needless to say we're pretty ok with snow up here in Alaska, there's so much snow here you can't believe it. The skiing is perfect perfect! I cannot get enough of this mountain ever! Do wear plenty of clothes though.... |
