Jersey Valley Lake 8
15 miles away
One should ask what has been the savings from the protection over the years which Jersey Lake provided in flood protection alone, not to mention the aesthetic benefits of fish and wildlife to the visitors. Future recreational development such as trails for mt. Bicycling and hiking during the warm seasons and the use of trails for winter recreation should be estimated and commented on. There are other similar lakes in the region which could be used as models of the numerous cost effectiveness and aesthetic benefits....

Robinson Creek

Nice place. Peaceful and relaxing....
...stantial log jams with strong undertows, take out is recommended at Fall-Hall Road. If you'd like to see the F-H Glen, it is a 200yard paddle downstream around a bend to the glen. Secure permission to use the F-H Camp trails if you don't want to drag you boat back upstream. If you want to paddle Robinson Creek, a better put in is at the Old County Road I on the North side where there is a State Forest campsite near the ATV trails (permit req'd to camp)on the north side of the bridge. Along the way are several class I (II) riffles and a millpond dam with designated portage on the right. At Kelly Road, Portage to the right of the dam to avoid a sharp drop on the downstream side of the bridge. The rest of the trip includes some class II (III) runs with several unmarked falls of 4-7' which should be portaged. There were a couple of places to play in and, if waterflow was above average, runs that would challenge an intermediate paddler. My 13 yo son and I paddled and dragged our way to the Black River. After over a dozen log jams in the last two miles (and 2 hours) of creek, we camped on ...

Mount La Crosse
42 miles away
Mt. La Crosse is a great place to ski and is a convenient drive for many. There are enough challenging runs to keep you busy and a race course is available on Sundays. The Nastar course on Mt. La Crosse seems more difficult than in Beaver Creek, CO. They have a variety of runs and a terrain park. There are no hotels at the base but most are a ten minute drive away....

Tyrol Basin
64 miles away
I love these crazy alpine names, Tyrol Basin ?ok , but hey as long as the skiing is decent they can name it whatever they want. It's a good ski area based on Wisconsin standards....Tyrol Basin, heck yeah! anytime! I love the place, easily my favorite nearby local weekend spot. Excellent runs maintained by cool people, yeah!...

Devils Head
66 miles away

Chestnut Mountain
71 miles away
I learned to ski at Chestnut Mountain, it's really good to go and learn at a local place like this before you go to the Rockies, so you don't waste time on the bunny slope over there....

Granite Peak

This is a 4-5 hour drive from the n/w side of Chicago . . . and *definately* worth it. Some buddies and I go up for a few days every winter and I have to say, this is the best you're going to find without doubling your driving time or hopping on an airplane....
i have lived and snowboarded in Colorado and Austria.
For the Midwest only Lutsen in Minn. can be compared!
The vertical keeps you challenged unlike the resorts in the U.P. and the rest of the Midwest! Only 3 hrs from Milwaukee!!!
love it if you are in the Midwest and can't head WEST!!!...

Nordic Mountain

... it to the next level.
Three terrain parks, with a beginner, intermediate, and expert park offer freestyle skiers and snowboarders everything they would expect in a top notch park. Nordic Mountain's goal is not only to have some of the best freestyle terrain in Wisconsin, but in all of the Midwest. Two glade runs offer expert skiers and boarders challenging tree skiing on some of the steepest terrain on the hill.
Realizing not everyone is willing to try skiing or snowboarding, Nordic Mountain installed the StoneRidge Tubing Park in 2006. The tubing park is over 1500ft long with over 90ft of vertical drop. If has five chutes and numerous ''rollers'' that add lots of thrills for the riders approaching speeds of up to 40mph. The best part is tubers don't have to walk back to the top of the hill. There is a specially designed lift that tows riders back to the top of the hill while sitting in their tubes. With the addition of the park, Nordic Mountain has opened up winter recreation to everyone.
In addition to the tubing park, Nordic Mountain continues to undergo many changes ...
