Tyrol Basin
I love these crazy alpine names, Tyrol Basin ?ok , but hey as long as the skiing is decent they can name it whatever they want. It's a good ski area based on Wisconsin standards....Tyrol Basin, heck yeah! anytime! I love the place, easily my favorite nearby local weekend spot. Excellent runs maintained by cool people, yeah!...
Cedar Hills Campground
11 miles away ...e rental nearby, boat rental in Sauk City. Horse trails adjacent, I don't know if you can keep one at camp. Pets allowed, on leash. At least one regular camper lands his helicopter at camp occasionally, so if you have one... Overnight camping is about $16, electric sites available. Bring quarters for the showers. Ice and firewood available. Many sites have absolutely beautiful views, you won't find this at Jellystone. You also won't find a camp store, organized activities, golf carts, swimming pool, restaurant and bar. This is a very pleasant basic campground. Not much to offer to bored little kids other than that which nature provides. It's not uncommen to see hawks and bald eagles soaring over the valley. From our site this spring we regularly see an adult pair of eagles with their babies. Cool. Interesting aside thing, this is also an operating farm, with cows and corn and tractors and stuff. You have to drive past the barn to get in. Remember to say HI! to the cows, they appreciate the attention. One last thing: Please don't tell anyone else about this ...
Yellowstone Lake
15 miles away This well maintained park offers something for everyone. The kids went swimming at the beach and amused themselves for hours, while I was able to fish. The lake has a variety and habitat to suit most anglers. We then spent the night in the wooded campgrounds after a hot shower! The state DNR really takes pride in this jewell!...
Yellowstone Lake State Park
15 miles away When you are at Yellowstone Lake just wander out the east end of the lake to Yellowstone Chalet Campground for the friendlist people around. This is the place to go for the ''biggest'' and best ice cream cones. Breakfast 7-10 is also a treat. Wisconsin's finest cheese for sell from Local factories. Don't forget the fine selection of groceries, pop, snacks, beer. I have yet to find another campground with such wonderful facilites so close (1/4 mile) from the lake....My family and I go every year. You're right about August being the wettest month--it rained virtually every second we were there last year, but we still HAD A BLAST!!!? The campground is amazing.? We're going again tonight for our annual trip. I definitley recommend camping here....

Chestnut Mountain
52 miles away I learned to ski at Chestnut Mountain, it's really good to go and learn at a local place like this before you go to the Rockies, so you don't waste time on the bunny slope over there....
Nordic Mountain
71 miles away 9 PHOTOS ...% of its terrain including the tubing park. With the improvements in snowmaking technology, they can produce higher quality snow and do so in warmer temperatures. In the past few years Nordic Mountain has more than doubled its snowmaking capacity. The goal is to open earlier, close later, and remain open on marginal winter days. One of the biggest projects to improve snowmaking at Nordic Mountain will serve a dual purpose. The addition of a 10 million gallon snowmaking pond will not only supply more cold water for snowmaking, but in the summer of 2009 is scheduled to be made into the second wakeboard winch park in the country. Nordic Mountain has always been considered a great place to learn. It is known as a great family hill at a very affordable price. That tradition continues while changes like improved terrain parks and new glade trails help to keep the skiers and snowboarders coming back. Low regular prices as well as numerous specials and special events, such as $10 lift ticket Customer Appreciation Day, help to make this place affordable for the entire family. For ...
Granite Peak
96 miles away 5 PHOTOS This is a 4-5 hour drive from the n/w side of Chicago . . . and *definately* worth it. Some buddies and I go up for a few days every winter and I have to say, this is the best you're going to find without doubling your driving time or hopping on an airplane.... i have lived and snowboarded in Colorado and Austria. For the Midwest only Lutsen in Minn. can be compared! The vertical keeps you challenged unlike the resorts in the U.P. and the rest of the Midwest! Only 3 hrs from Milwaukee!!! love it if you are in the Midwest and can't head WEST!!!...
Alpine Valley
98 miles away Alpine Valley is a very good ski resort for being in Wisconsin, it's a bit more on the easy side of the spectrum so if you're an advanced skier you might get bored. But I love it, it's a great place for a relaxing day of skiing. I come here a lot with my family and we all like it....
Mount La Crosse
99 miles away Mt. La Crosse is a great place to ski and is a convenient drive for many. There are enough challenging runs to keep you busy and a race course is available on Sundays. The Nastar course on Mt. La Crosse seems more difficult than in Beaver Creek, CO. They have a variety of runs and a terrain park. There are no hotels at the base but most are a ten minute drive away....
