 | this is a fun stretch of whitewater. i have run numerous times and have enjoyed it every time i would recomend it for anyone. it has a few class 2-3 ledges that are lots of fun and uncountable gravel bars and small rock gardens....near the end there is a nice way to end your trip with a swimming hole complete with a rope swing and all!!!!... |
Hughes River and Hazel River

If you are paddling the hazel this is a heads up when taking out at the low water bridge on monument mills road. The property owners there are real not so friendly. They think they own the river itself. Just a heads up....Some B and B's are near the put-in and take-out for the Hughes. La Bella Terra at 605 and 606 in Madison County is a weekend B and B in season (May-September)and near the take out. It also offers farmhouse dining on Sat. 540 547 2317.... |
Hannah Run Trail

As of 2008 I have been the Potomac Appalacian Trail Club overseer for Hannah Run Trail. The trail is about 4 miles in length. You can access from Skyline Drive; but I hike up from the Old Rag Mountain parking lot near Nethers, VA. It is a two mile hike from the parking lot, on Nicholson Hollow trail, before you actually hit Hannah Run trail. I maintain the first two miles of Hannah Run trail from Nicholson Hollow trail. The trail starts off with an easy slope, running parrallel with Hannah Run for about 1.5 miles. The next .5 miles is rather steep, but the trail is sound. My two mile segment of the trail ends with the trail crosses Hannah Run. I have heard that the remaining 2 miles of trail up to Skyline Drive is very steep. Last Saturday July 11th,2009 My son and his buddy, both 11 year old decided to canoe the rivanna river . We put the canoe at Shadwell near the bridge and came out at the cross road in Fluvanna county between 53 and 15. The trip took us 7 hours, 4 hours from Shadwell to Crafton and 3 hours from Crafton to Fluvanna court house. I though this could be a good information for the new comer in this area . I couldn't find any information about the time that this trip will take, well I hope this data will help other fellow persons.
