Roanoke River - South Fork
What parking place do you park at to get in? Parking place to get out for this trip? Could tubes work also?...This run is great, but it is NOT in Bedford or Campbell county not even near. it starts in Mongomry county and flows into Roanoke county.use the put in at the Dixie Caverns wayside on Rt. 11. there are several take outs you can use, the river is next to the road in several places....
Hoge Pond
10 miles away Yes, Harvey; Hoge Pond is on private property. It is a beautiful lake cradled by the rolling hills outside Blacksburg. A small residence sits on the shoreline. ...Can anyone tell me how to get to Hoge Pond. Is there somewhere you can park and hike to it? I've tried Walnut Springs with no luck. Thanks for your help!...
New River Junction Campground
18 miles away People are friendly and accommodating, great fishing, tubing and canoeing, but the New River has railroad tracks running along both sides of the river. Be aware that you are camping 20 yards from an active train track!...
Smith River
21 miles away The Smith River also offers a good run from the Philpott Dam on to North Bassett area, while generating electricity. Depending on the number generators running, this little stretch offers some good class II's and maybe a III ...... water temp in the 40's is perfect for the hot summer days....
Craig Creek
22 miles away I've never kayaked this stretch of Craig's Creek, but it is not the ONLY stretch by far! We spent 10 days in a lovely VRBO.com riverfront vacation rental downstream from New Castle, and kayaked both up and down the river multiple times, even though the area was in the middle of a bad drought. We will be renting in Roaring Run this year, which is according to the owner kayakable for the 5 miles to where it meets the James River. There is a very nice pull out/picnic spot where the two meet, and plenty of room to park. Take time out to splash around as well. I've never seen a river this clean before!...
Johns Creek
24 miles away AW advises to stay off this creek till the land owner issue is resolved. thanks!...
Big Reed Island Creek
28 miles away From the road that parallels a few miles of the lower section of Big Reed Island Creek, I think it's Rock Creek Rd. Or Rt. 694 ?? I've viewed some rapids that I think are about 8 miles above the junction with the new River. These rapids appear to be grade III to me, with a lot of large bolders. This appears to be somewhat dangerous to me but I'm a novice kayaker. Any comments about this section or suggestons?...
Winterplace
59 miles away Winterplace now has 28 trails + a terrain park. They have expanded the beginner area to include a new trail....
Snowshoe
74 miles away Snowshoe has the biggest elevation drop of any skiresort in the region which in my oppinion makes it a realtively great ski resort. You can get more skiing done before you have to get on the lift again. Which I think is very important in a ski resort....
