Goose Creek
12 miles away Tried to put in at the Fairfax Dam but the City of Fairfax has closed the road and posted no trespassing signs everywhere. Seem to be pretty serious about prosecuting violators and towing cars. The portage around dam is too hard for rafts and steep for others....
Shenandoah River
25 miles away ...he doah is really two different rivers. the low doah and the screamin high doah. When this gem is low it is full of club boaters huddled in eddies playing follow the leader through shallow rocky class IIish ledges. bull falls, being the biggest hit of the day is simple and easy to recover gear if you take a tumble. At high water, (note: this writer considers 10ft @ millville to be moderately high) This babe changes to huge fast waves and raft flipping holes. Go with someone who knows what is up if you are going out when the doah is actually got some water in it. Big water means that bull falls is washed out with easy sneak lines but third hole in the main chute only gets bigger as the water goes up. The staircase really starts rockin with some of the best play in the area. With good levels the potomac will back the doah up and you have about 200 yards of flat water til the confluence. Then when the doah meets the mac the big water is really there. river right has shit that will kill your ass and river left is big big big play waves with a couple of holes to miss. if you didn;t get yo...
Rappahannock River
26 miles away There is also another pit in point at a spot called Elies Ford road, and that is a 14 mile trip great scenery. Also even though it is a class I and II river. It is easier to use a kayak also during the summer you will want a kayak because of the extream low water in some spots....
Pohick Creek
28 miles away ...alk down from the sub division noted in AWA write-up. The whole run from Hooves to bridge at Route 1 took me 2 hours of paddling straight, no playing. 40 mins of that was in the dark or near dark. Nice and worth while run if you have the time. 3 mandatory portages in first 2 miles from Hooves to valley area behind Rolling Road subdivision due to down trees. If you're short on time, just put on by the walk way down to the creek from that neighborhood (can't remember the street) off Rolling road. That's where the fun rock garden area is. Easy section and really fun creek type section where all the gradient drop off is. Great area to practice beginner creek style running. Next run will be South run of the Pohick when it comes back up. I looked at it yesterday too and thought it was runable but higher than 220 would be better, I'm guessing 250 -275 cfs. I pretty sure Pohick will not be runable today. The great thing about the run is there are huge sections were you never know you're in a urban/suburban surroundings. Take out on right side of bridge at route 1. If you get the chance do ...
