Cow Creek
Live nearby, very infrequently enough water to float a canoe or even a tube.. For canoe or Kayak you'll need water just after a large flood. Warning - all private property in this section, several ranchers have fenced across the riverl...From FM 1174 to Lake Travis Cow Creek seldom has enough flowing water to float a toy canoe. The entire length of Cow Creek passes through private property. I submit that whitewater enthusiasts look elsewhere for a suitable stream....it's ok but not as good as new braunfels...

Barton Creek is a favorite among Austin locals whether it is flowing high or low because it is a great getaway right in the heart of Austin. This technical creek drains the northern side of Hwy 290, and ends in downtown Austin, but you would never know it while you are down in the creek. It has all of the charms of the Hill Country conveniently located close to work, school, and home for Austinites, and people travel from all over the state to catch this creek flowing. It has some quality playspots whether you are a paddler or just a swimmer....

Started at Rio Bonito Cabin Resort and traveled to Camp Tejas. The trip was wonderful and beautiful. That was one of my best relaxing and fun kayak trips yet. Also Rio Bonito Cabin Resort provides nightly rates on some very beautiful cabins with full ammenities. I just have to say my trip was awesome and the North San Gabriel River from Rio Bonito Cabin Resort was a blast....

Shoal Creek
22 miles away
Shoal Creek stays painfully dry nearly year round these days. You'll have a very short window of a couple days after heavy rains before it slows to nothing again....

San Gabriel River - South Fork

Good ride. Better after a good rain........

Blanco River
24 miles away
Just got back from a three day trip down this river. It was very scenic and beautiful. All of my crew were quite beat up after this trip though. At flows around 400 cfs there are some serious rapids on this section. There were many damns and there was also a fence constructed across the river just upstream from the Narrows. Lots of debris from the previous fence was found everywhere downstream along the river, so be careful not to get caught in those. The Narrows was downright freaky, and be prepared to carry boats and gear a long distance to get around this hazard. All in all it was a great trip....

I would like information from anyone who has paddled this section of the Blanco. Email to ash_barbara20@hotmail.com...

San Gabriel River - North Fork

Just made this trip this weekend (9/9/07) and the water is really high and running fast! Lots of trees to navigate and a shorter yak would have been nice (had Tarpon 120's). My wife and I are both 'new' to kayaking and this was just our 3rd trip and was almost more than we bargained for. You could not get all the way to the bottom of the dam to start and had to enter a little farther down. I think it is just more technical right now with the river so high and fast. A lot of tight turns and very small openings through the trees. One thing not mentioned anywhere here is the 8ft dam drop you have to portage. Beware of that one! Also, maybe 4 other places where the water was over some walkways that created 1-3 foot drops. You can run those or pretty easy to get around them.
Enjoy carefully!...
