I sat on the top side of waterfall and used a rope swing further down the trail, but no leeches. They really should look in to rebuilding a new draw bridge and maybe organizing a clean up day for the trails stream just past the waterfall and old brige. It has the potential of being like Bull Creek in the Austin Texas Green Belt....There are leeches in this waterfall!!!!!!!!!! But it's very pretty but not worth getting sucked on by leeches.... |
Salado Creek

So, after reading the above review, the wife and I decided to give this river a shot (we live close by anyway). We have had tons of rain this year, and the water was moving at a pretty good clip. However, the creek bed is wide, making the water shallow. We spent at least 50% of the trip walking. There are a few deep pools, but they are few and far between. Also, not mentioned above, we crossed 4 dams. 2 were easy, 2 were not. Some of the scenery was very nice, but personally, I think it wasn't nice enough to risk twisting an ankle.
If you do decide to go, give yourself an minimum of 5 hours to complete the trip.... |

On the offhand chance you may be back to read this, Kayakers are some of the most respectful people in the world. Why would you want to send someone to jail for simply passing thru a navigable stream that runs thru your land? I don't get it. You know, if it's that much of an issue, you could charge people entry or just insist they check in with you first. Most people aren't looking for trouble....This stretch and all others of rocky creek are private. If I see you on the creek you will at the very least go to jail for trespassing.... |

Started at Rio Bonito Cabin Resort and traveled to Camp Tejas. The trip was wonderful and beautiful. That was one of my best relaxing and fun kayak trips yet. Also Rio Bonito Cabin Resort provides nightly rates on some very beautiful cabins with full ammenities. I just have to say my trip was awesome and the North San Gabriel River from Rio Bonito Cabin Resort was a blast.... |

Just made this trip this weekend (9/9/07) and the water is really high and running fast! Lots of trees to navigate and a shorter yak would have been nice (had Tarpon 120's). My wife and I are both 'new' to kayaking and this was just our 3rd trip and was almost more than we bargained for. You could not get all the way to the bottom of the dam to start and had to enter a little farther down. I think it is just more technical right now with the river so high and fast. A lot of tight turns and very small openings through the trees. One thing not mentioned anywhere here is the 8ft dam drop you have to portage. Beware of that one! Also, maybe 4 other places where the water was over some walkways that created 1-3 foot drops. You can run those or pretty easy to get around them.

My family (wife and 3 sons) just kayaked the Lampasas from Stillhouse Hollow to I-35 on 10/25/09. The release from Stillhouse Hollow dam is 1560 cfs. This means the river is about 4 ft high and very swift current. Have to watch for sweepers and strainers. Stay in the middle of the river. No white water, just current. Put in at Chalk Ridge Falls park and take out at I-35 bridge. The takeout is a little tough, but doable. My wife fell out when her kayak hit a log and it took us about 500 yards to recover her boat and get her back in it. Water is very cold. Need air temp to be 75 plus to be safe here. Would be better with release at 500-1000 cfs.... |
