These beaches for the most part are open to the public. The NPS does close specific areas to foot traffic during nesting season for some shorebirds and turtles. The Pea Island Wildlife Refuge is located just a mile North of us. This refuge welcomes hundreds of species of birds and the NPS host an area that allow visitors to view and walk through the refuge. It is a must see!!! Other locations to visit that are within a 1/2 hour to an hour drive. Bodie Island Lighthouse - In addition to the lighthouse, there are also some hiking trails that are nearby. Cape Hatteras Lighthouse - Buxton Woods trail. Roanoke Island has many walking trails, through town and around the community. It is also possible to take a walk during the day through The Lost Colony's Fort Raleigh National Historic Site and Theatre Area.
